Gestalt Psychology

Gestalt psychology is a school of thought focused on how people perceive and experience the world as organized, unified wholes rather than as isolated parts. Its foundational principle is that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”—meaning humans naturally structure sensory input into meaningful patterns and forms.[1][2][3]

Key Principles of Gestalt Psychology

·       Prägnanz (Simplicity): We perceive objects in their simplest, most stable form.[4][1]

·       Similarity: Items that are alike (in colour, shape, size, etc.) tend to be grouped together in perception.[5][1]

·       Proximity: Objects that are close together are seen as belonging to the same group.[6][1]

·       Continuity: We favour continuous lines and patterns over disjointed or abrupt changes.[1][5]

·       Closure: We tend to fill in gaps to perceive incomplete shapes as whole, closed figures.[6][1]

·       Figure-Ground: We distinguish objects (figures) from their background (ground) in perception.[5]

Importance and Applications

Gestalt psychology has strongly influenced fields like perception science, visual design, and communication, explaining why we see coherent patterns in images or organize information intuitively. It highlights the mind’s tendency for pattern-seeking and holistic processing in all aspects of experience.[4][5]
