Artist Profile: Édouard Manet

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a groundbreaking French painter who served as a bridge between Realism and Impressionism, reshaping the course of modern art. Born into a wealthy Parisian family, Manet resisted familial pressure to pursue a naval career, choosing instead to dedicate his life to painting.[1][2][3]

His early works, including the provocative "The Luncheon on the Grass" (1863) and "Olympia" (1865), shocked audiences with their modern subjects and bold style, challenging academic conventions and causing controversy at official art salons. Manet’s approach—a direct, loose "alla prima" technique and scenes of contemporary urban life—set him apart and earned admiration from progressive artists and writers such as Émile Zola.[4][5][1]

Throughout his career, Manet maintained complex relationships with the emerging Impressionist group but mostly exhibited at the official Paris Salon. He was known for painting everyday people and Parisian leisure, influencing impressionist masters while continually evolving his own style.[2][3]

Honored late in life with France’s Légion d’honneur, Manet left behind a legacy of over 400 paintings, including iconic works like "A Bar at the Folies-Bergère" (1882), and is universally regarded as a father of modern painting for his radical vision, technique, and embrace of modernity.[5][1][4]
